The Appalachian Trail Conservancy’s mission is to protect, manage, and advocate for the Appalachian National Scenic Trail. The Appalachian Trail is a public footpath across 2,155 miles of Appalachian Mountain ridges extending from Maine to Georgia. While a popular attraction in Western North Carolina, the closest access from Hendersonville is in Hot Springs, NC, about an hour north of Hendersonville. Approximately 97 miles of the AT run through North Carolina, and these are some of the highest peaks along the entire trail, including several peaks higher than 6,000 feet.

Located in eastern Henderson County at an elevation of 4,232 feet above sea level, Bearwallow Mountain is an easy to moderate one-mile (each way) trail that features a grassy meadow at its summit, which often has cows grazing, along with a historic fire tower, breathtaking scenery and a 360° view. From atop the peak, see such area landmarks as downtown Hendersonville, Mt. Pisgah, Mt. Mitchell, the Hickory Nut Gorge and upstate South Carolina. As of fall 2020, this trail now connects to the Wildcat Rock Trail at the mountain’s summit. Both the Bearwallow Mountain Trail and the Trombatore Trail start from the same parking lot, at 4854 Bearwallow Mountain Road, Hendersonville. Parking is limited, please only park in designated parking areas.
Notice: Bearwallow Mountain Trail is now open, however road closures in Gerton on 74-A and the lower section of Bearwallow Mountain Rd are still in effect. Hikers should only access the trailhead from the Edneyville side of Bearwallow Mt. The Hickory Nut Gorge is a very active Hurricane Helene recovery area. Be mindful that emergency response may be delayed due to road closures. Show your consideration and respect for the residents of this highly impacted area by respecting trail notices, staying off private property and only traveling on roads that are open to the public. You can find routes that avoid the road closures in Google Maps.

Bell Park provides a 69-acre tranquil escape on the edge of the Green River Gorge in southern Henderson County.
Conserving Carolina acquired the land in 2015 and worked with Henderson County to make it a public park in 2024 with lush forests, waterfalls and wildflowers, including beautiful rhododendrons and mountain laurel.
Bell Park is named in honor of summer camp pioneers Frank and Calla Bell, and continues their legacy by creating another place for people to connect with nature.
It extends from the High Bridge near Lake Summit and follows the banks of the Green River until it reaches the 14,000-acre Green River Game Lands.

The Blue Ridge Parkway follows the mountain ridges from Shenandoah National Park in Virginia to the Great Smoky Mountains National Park in North Carolina and Tennessee. The Parkway’s 469 toll-free miles combines natural beauty, mountain forests, wildlife, wildflowers and magnificent views. Located 15 miles north of Hendersonville, a portion of the most famous drive in America weaves through Henderson County. The closest access to the Parkway from Downtown Hendersonville is near the North Carolina Arboretum, at BRP milepost 393.6.

The small town of Brevard offers more than 250 scenic waterfalls. Brevard is located between Pisgah National Forest and Gorges State Park, making this area popular for outdoor enthusiasts. One of the most popular waterfalls to access is the 60-foot Looking Glass Falls in Pisgah National Forest, located along side of Highway 276. Transylvania county is home to a rare white squirrel population, that is said to be descended from an escaped carnival animal in 1949. they share a similar coloration with small dark patches on their heads and shoulders but are otherwise white. the animals are not albino, which are totally free of pigmentation, the squirrels are considered an offshoot of the eastern gray squirrel.

Carl Sandburg Home National Historic Site is where Carl Sandburg, American poet, historian, author, and lecturer spent the final 22 years of his long and productive life at his estate, Connemara. The home, originally built in 1838, displays the Sandburg’s furnishing as they lived at Connemara from 1945-1968, including Carl Sandburg’s collection of 12,000 books. Tour the home for a small fee, and learn about Sandburg’s life as a writer, journalist, folk singer, social activist and Pulitzer Prize-winning poet and biographer. Visit the barn and descendants of Mrs. Sandburg’s champion dairy goat herd and hike over five miles of trails. Access to trails, grounds, barns and public areas is free.

Chimney Rock at Chimney Rock State Park is a still-developing international outdoor destination located just 25 miles southeast of Asheville and nestled in the historic Chimney Rock Village at the foot of the Blue Ridge. DuPont State Recreational Forest encompasses more than 10,000 acres that span across both Henderson and Transylvania counties. This treasured state forest is one of the region’s most popular destinations for its breathtaking waterfalls, and 80 miles of roads and trails. It is open year-round. Hooker Falls on Little River has become a popular swimming hole, dropping off a 13-foot high natural ledge before flowing into Cascade Lake. Fawn Lake is another popular place to take a dip. Neither location has a lifeguard on duty, swim at your own risk.
Many scenes from the 2012 hit movie, The Hunger Games and the 1992 film, The Last of the Mohicans were shot in DuPont State Recreational Forest. The Hunger Games were filmed entirely in North Carolina.
The Ecusta Trail is a game changer for outdoor enthusiasts in Western North Carolina. The six-mile paved route follows the old railway line from downtown Hendersonville to the crossroads in Horse Shoe.
The multi-use trail is wide, flat and connects to several shops, eateries, breweries and coffee cafes.
Outside the city limits, the landscape changes to pine forests, bamboo groves, pastoral settings and the rippling waters of Shaw Creek, with the peak of Mount Pisgah visible in the distance.
The Hendersonville Welcome Center is an official trailhead, where folks can park, use the restroom, and learn more about places and things to do along the trail. The trail will eventually extend 19 miles, connecting the downtowns of Hendersonville and Brevard.
Currently, the western terminus of the trail (end of Phase I), is located at The Crossroads, which is home to Root + Bone restaurant and an adjacent rock-n-roll themed bar with outdoor deck.

Etowah Park’s facilities include a shelter, picnic tables, a playground, a newly repaved walking trail, tennis courts, 4 lighted ball fields, concession stand, batting cages, playground, basketball court, a soccer field, a shuffleboard court, a little library, and a Frisbee golf course. The picnic shelter has two 7 foot tables, six 5 foot tables, electrical outlets and a water spout.

Accessible a little more than an hour’s drive from Hendersonville, Great Smoky Mountains National Park (GSMNP) covers seven counties in North Carolina and parts of south eastern Tennessee, and serves as the Gateway to the southern-most section of the Blue Ridge Parkway (BRP), all of which is contained within GSMNP, beginning at BRP Milepost 469.1. The closest sections of the park to Hendersonville are the Cataloochee and Cherokee areas. The 520,000-acre park itself is one of the largest wilderness areas in the Eastern United States, covering more than 800 square miles. The park contains some of the highest peaks in the East, with elevations in excess of 6,000 feet. A popular destination to view elk, all visitors are encouraged to keep their distance from the elk and all wild animals. The best way to see the elk is using binoculars in the early morning or late evening. Visit in early summer to see calves and September to October for mating season.
The Great Smoky Mountains cover a wide section of the Southern Appalachian Mountains across the two states, much wider than the public lands within this extremely popular National Park. Like much of the Southern Appalachians, the Smokies are known for having extremely diverse and unique ecosystems, which include grassy mountain balds, wetlands and everything in between.

The Green River Game Lands includes more than 14,000 acres in Henderson and Polk Counties, located southeast of downtown Hendersonville. This area is home to steep, rugged terrain and dense forest land, as well as access to the Green River, which offers both gentle and extremely difficult sections with class IV & V rapids. The Game Lands are managed by the North Carolina Wildlife Resources Commission and are used for hunting, fishing, hiking, mountain biking, and tubing or kayaking. Due to the difficult terrain, all visitors are urged to use extreme caution in all parts of the forest. Much of the Green River Game Lands are recommended for advanced hikers and expert kayakers. Parking is available at many locations, but some of the closest designated parking to Hendersonville and hiking trails would be on Big Hungry Road at the Bishop Branch and Long Ridge Trailheads. Hendo Rancho on the Ecusta Trail is the ideal location for your group to stay when exploring downtown Hendersonville. It is located right on the Ecusta Rail Trail, which will offer easy outdoor recreation once it opens in June 2025. Stay for a few months for a work/play stay at a special rate.
Holmes Educational State Forest operates as a living classroom. The forest began as a nursery developed by the Civilian Conservation Corps in the 1930s to supply landowners with white pine and yellow poplar seedlings.
Today, Holmes State Forest contains five miles of hiking trails. The popular Talking Trees Trail, an easy walking trail, features pedestals in front of a series of tree species. Visitors can push a button on the pedestal and listen to the trees “talk” about specific characteristics of that type of tree, the habitats where they are found and uses for their products.
The forest also includes an interactive museum, picnic tables, restrooms, equipment for fighting forest fires and displays depicting the ecology of a managed forest. A spacious picnic shelter (with grills) is also available. The forest is located about 8-1/2 miles from downtown Hendersonville.
Jackson Park is the largest municipal-owned park in Western North Carolina, covering 220 acres. Managed by Henderson County Parks & Recreation. Popular for birding, basketball courts, an accessible playground, athletic fields, disc golf, mountain biking skills park, walking paths and many picnic areas.
Just 15 minutes from downtown Hendersonville, Jump Off Rock provides one of the grandest panoramic views in Western North Carolina.
The rock is the centerpiece of a small, well-maintained mountaintop park. From the parking area, visitors follow a relatively short, flat path through the park to the rock, which is perched on a west-facing ridge with sweeping views of the Blue Ridge and Great Smoky mountains.
On a clear day, four states are visible – North Carolina, South Carolina, Georgia and Tennessee. It’s also a popular spot to watch gorgeous sunsets.
Throughout the year, Jump Off Rock is utilized for concerts, weddings, group yoga and family picnics.
There are three hiking trials at Jump Off Rock, varying in length and difficulty. The trails dip down and circumnavigate the rock. The Blue Trail is rated as an easy trail and takes about eight minutes. The Yellow Trail is rated moderate and takes around 15 minutes. The Red Trail is the most difficult and the longest.

The park is open daily, sunrise to sunset. No admission charge. Pets are welcome on a leash, and there is a foot-pump spigot to get water for the pups.
Kanuga was established in 1928 as a mountain retreat for Episcopalian Church groups. It has since evolved into a conference and retreat center, a summer camp, and sanctuary, set on 1,400 peaceful acres. Kate’s and Pete’s Park, located next to the Fletcher Library, is a quaint park feature a playground, paved walking trail, small picnic shelter, and green open space. Kate’s and Pete’s Park is a popular stop for citizens after a trip to the Fletcher Library.
Lake Julian Park is a family recreational facility located on the banks of 300-acre Lake Julian in Arden, off of Long Shoals Road. Lake Julian Park offers fishing, picnic areas, disc golf, outdoor games, a playground, paddleboats, special event venue rentals, and water access along a picturesque 300-acre public lake.
Lake Powhatan offers a sandy beach, swimming, fishing, hiking, mountain biking, picnic area, campground, trails, and educational programs. Lake Powhatan is located just minutes from Asheville.
Maddox Meadows Family RV Park is a small park with 35 spots located in Etowah, not far from Downtown Hendersonville, DuPont State Recreational Forest and Pisgah National Forest. Opened in 2024, the park is situated along the soon-to-open Ecusta Trail, a rail-trail, offers a playground, bathhouse, dog park and more. Offers nightly, weekly and monthly rates.

Mills River Park is a 48-acre park located at 124 Town Center Dr. Its amenities include 1.25 miles of paved multi-use trail, access to Mills River for splashing and tubing, a dog park, large playground, 2 picnic shelters, many picnic tables and benches scattered throughout, tennis/pickleball courts, basketball courts, a baseball diamond, and more. Mills River Park opens at dawn and closes at dusk. Park Restrooms are open seven days per week, during daylight hours.

The Mountains to Sea Trail (MST) is the state’s official hiking trail. It covers 1,175 miles, from Great Smoky Mountains National Park in Western North Carolina to the Outer Banks in Eastern North Carolina. On its western-most end, it connects with the Appalachian Trail. The trail is split into sections, and the sections closest to Hendersonville include Sections 2 & 3.
Section 2: The Balsams — This stretch of trail, which begins far to the west of us and ends at the Pisgah Inn on the Blue Ridge Parkway, is rated “Strenuous” due to its significant elevation changes with steep climbs and descents, difficult trail tread, and long stretches without road crossings. This section includes the third highest peak on the entire trail, Waterrock Knob, which is at 6,292 feet in elevation. This section passes near some of the most popular parts of this section of the Blue Ridge Parkway, including Richland Balsam, Wildcat Falls, Devil’s Courthouse, Black Balsam Knob, Sam Knob, Graveyard Fields and Graveuard Fields Falls, Skinny Dip Falls, and more.
Section 3: The High Peaks & Asheville — This stretch of trail, which “begins” at the Pisgah Inn on the Blue Ridge Parkway, is rated “Strenuous” due to its significant elevation changes with steep climbs and descents, and difficult trail tread. The portions of Section 3 that are closest to Hendersonville primarily stay near the Blue Ridge Parkway and go through the Bent Creek area, and pass by the Blue Ridge Parkway Welcome Center and Southern Highland Craft Guild Folk Art Center. This stretch ends to the north east of Hendersonville, in Black Mountain.
North Carolina Arboretum is a member of the University of North Carolina System and spans 434 acres. The Arboretum offers curated gardens, horticultural exhibits, education center, hiking, biking, indoor exhibits, educational events and nature trails are a few of the attractions available to the public. Pearson’s Falls and Glen is a top natural attraction in Polk County, NC, hosting over 30,000 visitors each year. We are located in the foothills of Western North Carolina off Hwy. 176, between the towns of Tryon and Saluda. This unique botanical preserve is comprised of over 300 acres of rich cove forest, spring-fed streams and a moderate 1/4-mile trail to a 90 ft. waterfall. We boast having over 310 species of wildflowers and plants, a few that are rare. Mosses, lichens, shrubs, and a variety of trees reside in this Glen, which is classified as a deciduous climax forest. Pearson’s Falls is a perfect stop when visiting the area. We have picnic facilities and can accommodate groups and cyclists.
Located just outside Downtown Hendersonville, you will find multiple trails through both woods and meadows that are dotted with outdoor art. All trails are relatively flat and would be considered easy to navigate. Parking is available at the Kellogg Center and a small lot at 362 South Rugby Road in Hendersonville.
**Please note: Parts of Pisgah National Forest’s Pisgah Ranger District (the section closest to Hendersonville) have reopened, as of October 18th, after the damage caused by Hurricane Helene. There is still much work to be done, and some trails have not yet been touched. Please hike or bike at your own risk, and use extreme caution.**
The Pisgah National Forest’s more than 500,000 acres stretch across the eastern edge of Western North Carolina’s mountains. The closest section to Hendersonville is the Pisgah Ranger District, which includes attractions such as Looking Glass Falls, Sliding Rock, The Cradle of Forestry and the North Mills River Recreational Area.

The Palmetto Trail is South Carolina’s state trail that stretches some 500 miles from the mountains in the Upstate to the coast, near Charleston. Parts of the northern-most section of this trail dip into North Carolina and run along the state line, right in Henderson County. The closest section to Hendersonville is the Saluda Mountains Passage, which goes between Tuxedo and Saluda. This moderate to strenuous section includes switchbacks, some steep climbs and historic sites along the way. In the Tuxedo area, parking is available on Anders Road, near Camp Talisman. In Saluda, parking is available at Orchard Lake Campground.

Built and maintained by Conserving Carolina (with the help of Southern Appalachian Highlands Conservancy and many generous landowners, donors and volunteers), the Strawberry Gap Trailhead is located in Gerton on Gerton Highway. The trail connects to the Trombatore Trail in the picturesque Blue Ridge Pastures after an approximately 2.8-mile hike, but sees about 800 feet in elevation change, making it a challenging hike. Please note, this trail is only open to human hikers, meaning no dogs, bikes or horses. The Starberry Gap Trail is part of the Hickory Nut Trail Gorge trail system, one of 12 North Carolina State Trails.
The home is situated on a large property with a babbling creek at the front and plenty of outdoor space for fun and games. The Trails of St. John are open to the public daily from dawn to dusk. Entrances to the Trails are located in the Parish Hall parking lot at 1905 Greenville Highway. Hikers are welcome to use the restrooms by the Parish Hall when the building is open (Monday through Saturday, 9:00am-4:00pm). Please abide by the rules posted on the kiosks.
This strenuous 2.4 mile (each way) trail will get your heart pumping as it takes you through pastures up to a grassy bald with spectacular views of the Hickory Nut Gorge and Bearwallow Mountain. Both the Trombatore Trail and Bearwallow Mountain Trail start from the same parking lot, at 4854 Bearwallow Mountain Road, Hendersonville. This moderate to very strenuous 5-mile (each way) hike takes you to the summit of Bearwallow Mountain the long way around. Along the trail, you will see Little Bearwallow Falls, Wildcat Rock (which offers stunning views) and a picturesque ridgeline meadow. The most strenuous section of this hike is the portion between the waterfall and the ridgeline meadow. The trailhead is located on Hwy. 74-A, at 3823 Gerton Hwy in Gerton, NC, in eastern Henderson County, with parking available across the road at the Florence Nature Preserve. Discover the Youngs Mountain Trail, a recently unveiled 2.1-mile pathway (totaling 4.2 miles for a round-trip excursion) nestled along the northern perimeter of Lake Lure. Ascending 1,200 feet in elevation, this trail leads adventurers to the majestic cliffs adorning the mountain’s summit. From this vantage point, soak in breathtaking vistas of Lake Lure, Rumbling Bald, Weed Patch Mountain, and the lower Hickory Nut Gorge. On clear days, marvel at the distant silhouette of Mt. Mitchell and the Black Mountains.
Spanning 437 acres of protected land curated by Conserving Carolina, this trail is the latest addition to the expanding network of the Hickory Nut Gorge State Trail. Envisioned to interconnect with neighboring pathways like the Weed Patch Mountain Trail, the Youngs Mountain Trail also lays the groundwork for future links to the proposed Wilderness Gateway State Trail, stretching eastward towards Hickory.
